My interest and development in portraiture and face studies commenced seriously whilst I was living and working in Africa between 1978 and 82 . As a Minister of religion, and specifically as a Salvation Army Officer, I found myself involved in many and varied human related issues and activities. With my wife, Sylvia, we travelled far and wide throughout the homeland countries of Southern Africa, going into many rural areas, and it was on one of these visits that I started to do flash portraits of African children.
I quickly realised that this was something I wanted to concentrate on and so purchased my first box of pastels. I found an immediate affinity with this medium and from that point worked on developing the style I have today.
Since those early days we have lived in Australia, the UK and the Netherlands, as well as visiting and working in 6 countries in South America, Canada and the USA all of which gave me inspiration for my pictures.
Using the opportunities to support the work I was doing, I was able to fund-raise by exhibiting and auctioning my pictures. I have also illustrated books, both in colour and pen and ink as well as first day covers and stamp designs. In addition I have moved into wild life studies, with a few in water colour but still maintaining my first priority of soft pastels.
